Ragnar Tornquist at Funcom has many times alluded to a third The Longest Journey game, making the series a trilogy. No specifics are as of yet known. The game is also referred to as Dreamfall 2, as it supposedly concludes the story of Dreamfall. On his blog, Tornquist has taken to colloquially calling it Dreamfall the Next.

During his Dreamfall 'post mortem', Tornquist did suggest that the conclusion of Dreamfall's story would not necessarily be the conclusion of the TLJ saga. He has also said in posts that he wishes to see the story completed one way or another - if not as a series of games, then in another format, such as a graphic novel.

FunCom announced on the 1st of March 2007 that they had received funding from the Norwegian Film Fund to research the online distribution of episodic gaming content, as well as to aid pre-production on a series of Dreamfall Chapters. Given the thorough discussion of episodic distribution by Ragnar on his blog this is unsurprising, although extremely welcome, news.
