White Lady
From TLJwiki
The White Lady is a figure whom, according to Faith, has spoken to her in the Winter. This White Lady told Faith about April Ryan, and that Zoe Castillo needed to "save her". Later, when Zoe returns to the Winter, Faith says that the White Lady has another message - that Zoe "did good", that she indeed saved April. This is an odd thing to say as it appears April has been mortally wounded at this point.
The White Lady was the one who told Faith to help Zoe - whether she told Faith exactly how to manipulate the Wire or Faith figured it out on her own is not certain. She is also the one who told Faith that she is Zoe's younger sister, and that her presence is "hurting the world".
Speculation about the identity of this White Lady has run rife. Candidates include:
- The White Dragon: she is the White of the Kin and her parting words to Zoe ("You must find her, Zoë. You must help her.") are reminiscent of Faith's ("Zoë... ...find April...save April"). She also says the cryptic phrase: "Faith will bring you where you're needed the most."
- Lady Alvane: she has intervened in April's fate in the past, and some have suggested that her name is derived from the Lat. albinus - 'white'.
- Helena Chang: if Faith and Zoe do indeed share Helena as a mother, it makes sense that she would be the one to tell Faith. She also seems suspiciously well-informed about Faith's current situtation. Also, she wears a white lab coat. It is strange that Faith would not comment that the "White Lady" was their mother, however.
- Some avatar of Eingana: the DreamCore is certainly sophisticated enough to generate an avatar and given that she regulates DreamNet, projecting into Faith's Winter could be accomplished via their past connection.
- April Ryan herself: she is related to the White Kin.
Attempts to guess this woman's identity are hampered by the fact that Faith never offers a description of the White Lady, beyond stating that she is "all white." There are several female characters in The Longest Journey and Dreamfall who have very pale skin, white hair, or dress in white - and when Gordon Halloway and Adrian became Guardians, their skin turned completely white, so this White Lady might have a connection to the Tower.
In addition, the ambiguous nature of the Winter makes it even more difficult to guess who she could be. Currently, Zoe is the only one who has demonstrated the ability to travel there.
Whoever this woman is, the following facts are all we have to go on:
- She is likely a native of or frequent visitor to Stark, as she uses the phrase "did good", which is not commonly used in Arcadia.
- She not only knows about the Winter but is able to go there, either by using a Dreamer Console or possibly by Shifting.
- She knows about Zoe's journey, and about events in Arcadia.
- She knows Faith has the ability to communicate with Zoe, and therefore possibly about the connection between them.
- She also appears to have some sort of endgame or master plan in mind.
All of the candidates above fulfil one or more of these conditions, but of course the true White Lady could be someone else entirely. It is likely that fans will have to wait for The Longest Journey 3 to get an answer.
